Sports Betting Laws in California
California has no legal sports betting after Props 26 (tribal retail) and 27 (statewide online) both failed decisively in November 2022. In 2025 tribal groups confirmed they will not pursue a 2026 measure, pointing to 2028 at the earliest. Separately, AB 831 (effective Jan 1, 2026) banned dual-currency sweepstakes sportsbooks. Legal options today are daily fantasy sports, CFTC-regulated prediction markets, tribal casinos, cardrooms and horse racing. The offshore books listed here operate in a legal grey area — there is no federal law criminalizing an individual Californian for placing a bet, but there is no state consumer protection either.
How to Bet on Sports in California
- Pick a book above — BetOnline and BetUS are our top all-rounders; Thunderpick if you want crypto-only.
- Create an account. You'll need a name, email and date of birth (21+).
- Fund with crypto (Bitcoin, Litecoin or USDT) for the fastest deposits and payouts, or use a card.
- Place your bet — moneyline, spread, totals, parlays, props or live in-play.
- Withdraw — crypto payouts land the same day; cards and checks take days.
When Will Sports Betting Be Legal in California?
Not before 2028. The 2022 defeat was expensive and bruising for both tribes and operators, and the powerful tribal coalition has said it won't return to the ballot in 2026. Any future measure will likely be tribal-led. Until then, Californians who want to bet online use the offshore books above or legal DFS and prediction markets.
California Teams to Bet On
California has more pro teams than any state: 49ers, Rams and Chargers (NFL); Lakers, Warriors, Clippers, Kings and Suns rivals (NBA); Dodgers, Giants, Padres, Angels and A's (MLB); Kings, Ducks and Sharks (NHL); plus LAFC and the LA Galaxy in MLS. Offshore books cover all of them with full markets and live betting.
Taxes on Gambling Winnings in California
California taxes gambling winnings as ordinary income, with brackets up to 12.3% (13.3% on income over $1M). Only California State Lottery winnings are exempt. All gambling winnings are also taxable under US federal law regardless of the operator's location — report them even without a W-2G. Keep records of wins and losses; we are not tax advisers.
Responsible gambling in California
Offshore books are not part of any California self-exclusion program, so use each operator's own deposit-limit and self-exclusion tools. California help: California: CalGETS 1-800-GAMBLER. National: 1-800-GAMBLER (text 800GAM). 21+.
